Monetizing an IDN if you are not familiar with the language & culture can be an obstacle, but it doesn’t have to be.
If full scale development is your goal, then partnering with an existing business in that country makes a lot of sense.. you provide the name & traffic, they provide the platform.
And besides, development doesn’t have to be hard either, there’s a huge number of developers, graphic designers and content writers on sites such as Freelancer and Elance and the ironic thing is, from my experience, when I’ve put out jobs for regular English development projects, I’ve often received quotes from non-English contractors. i.e. Russians, Chinese..
If development doesn’t float your boat, then there are many parking and affiliate services out there that are IDN friendly.
Logging in to one of my accounts, I was greeted with this the other day, a below average Japanese IDN I picked up on a drop brought this recurring payment in via a single user, monetized through a Japanese affiliate site.
$42.50 thanks.
There are opportunities in IDN, because today it is still a niche area of domaining, and if you are prepared to also play in niche genres such as this, there are even more untapped opportunities.

There’s a few listed on the ad provider section of the IDNTools resources page, but I immediately notice a few absent from that list.

Great post. I’ve put up many small IDN sites up, and I’m just on the verge of doing some major development. Like many of us who are vested in IDNs, I’ll be looking for content writers in several languages, so thanks for the tips.
